Title
Early medieval hooked tag
Description
English: An incomplete Late Anglo-Saxon artefact, probably a fragment of a hooked tag consisting of most of the plate with the distinguishing hook and attachment rivet-holes now missing. The surviving plate is circular in shape with a knop at one end. The knop is riveted through the centre and there is a second rivet above it. The two rivets fix a sub-rectangular sheet of silver on the back (8.6mm by 4.1mm), attached at a slight angle and possible representing the remains of a hook that may have been a later addition, perhaps a repair for a broken-off original.

The front of the plate is decorated with a cross with hatched arms inside a plain border. The void between each cross-arm is filled with a Trewhiddle-style stylised animal, two looking backwards and two looking forwards. Each animal has a dotted eye and incised lines emphasising creases on its body. Some niello survives in the design. The upper part of the plate is lost to a worn break. The back is undecorated.
