Title
Early medieval harness fitting
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy harness fitting dating to the Early Medieval period, c. AD 1000- 1100.

The object now consists of a loop and the truncated stub of an arm. The loop is oval in shape, enclosed within a lozenge with exaggerated and extended rectilinear knops on two of the three angles of the lozenge that do not adhere to the arm. These knops have three tiny pellets extending from the knop to the edge of the loop in a vertical line. The arm is D-shaped in cross section and extends 11.9mm from the loop before the old break. Opposite the surviving arm is an additional knop which is more rounded and worn, and markedly thicker than the other two more pointed, sliender knops.

Williams (2007:1) describes this form of fitting as harness links. He observes that examples with knops on the loops may be earlier than those without knops. As these knops are slender and small, this example could potentially represent a transitional form between the thickened knops visible on ESS-73DA7F and the knop-less examples.

Measurements: 30.9mm length, 26.1mm width, 4.7mm thickness, weight 5.25g.
