Title
Early medieval harness fitting; Anglo-Scandinavian bit link
Description
English: Early medieval horse harness bit link; cast copper alloy bit link of 11th century date. The link has a lozengiform terminal at one end, with a circular hole in the middle of the lozenge and three knops, one on each of three corners of the lozenge. The fourth corner extends into a bar, which has a thick, undecorated collar partway along it and which has a large, oval loop at the other terminal. The oval loop has worn through at the far end. These bit links were attached by the oval loop to the end of the horse's bit. The lozengiform terminal was attached to the reins. As the link swung from the bit at the oval end, it is common to find them worn through at this point. Length 58.2mm, width 22.7mm, thickness 9.4mm, weight 25.93g Ref: Williams 'Finds Research Group Datasheet 39: Anglo-Scandinavian Horse Harness Fittings' (pp. 4, fig. 5)
