Title
Early medieval hanging bowl mount
Description
English: Early medieval hanging bowl mount; cast copper alloy mount, probably one of three suspension mounts from a hanging bowl of 7th century date. The mount consists of a broad, flaring plate which then narrows and thickens to form a sturdy, curving hook with a rounded end. There is a small lip at the point where the plate meets the hook and the plate has two decorative horizontal moulded lines across it. There are traces of quite thick solder on the back of the plate. The mount is quite corroded and none of the original surface now remains. Hanging bowl mounts of this type would have been attached to the side of the bowl by the plate and the curling hook would have fitted next to the lip of the bowl to form a closed loop for the suspension chain. Three mounts were fitted at regular points around the bowl. Leahy's "Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Lindsey" has an illustration of a hanging bowl mount of almost identical profile to this find, although the decoration is much more elaborate. Length 35.3mm, width 11.7mm, thickness 16.7mm, weight 11.11g Ref: Leahy "Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Lindsey", pages 84-85 and page 107 (figure 39).
