Title
Early medieval hanging bowl escutcheon
Description
English: An incomplete, enamelled copper-alloy hooked escutcheon from an early medieval hanging bowl, dating to c. 7th century AD. The hook is badly corroded and broken, but there is evidence of moulded ribbing around its length. This hook would have curled over the bowl rim to hold a suspension ring. The plate of the escutcheon is sub-oval in shape with a triangular top edge from which the hook projects, ending on each side in a knob, one of which is missing. The sides taper down to a broken edge where part of the central decoration is also missing. The plate is decorated with a zoomorphic knot-work design comprised of champlevé enamelled cells, with the enamel badly degraded. It has a slightly curved profile and flat back, there is also a small hole through the main plate.

Length 40.2mm, width 23.9mm, thickness 2.1mm, weight 5.23g.
