early medieval copper alloy equal arm brooch |
||
Description |
English: Early Medieval copper alloy equal arm brooch, 43mm long, 24mm wide and 18m thick. The object is in fair condition with a brown patina and weighs 13.57grams. The brooch consists of a central curved arm which has faceted corners and a sub circular section. Each terminal is sub rectangular in form and section and identical. The terminals consist of a flat base from which emerges two curved motifs which mirror each other. They touch near the centre forming a triangular void between them and the base. They then curve outwards and downwards, before each terminates in a scroll which turns into the centre of the curve. This has a sub circular depression in its centre and is flanked with two sub circular holes, one above and one below. The outer edge of each curve has two triangular protrusions flanking the scroll terminal and a further protrusion joining the curve to the flat base. The object has two semi-circular lugs on one terminal which has a large amount of iron corrosion, suggesting an iron pin. The other terminal has a sub rectangular catchplate which appears complete.
The brooch is similar in form to Continental Ansate brooches, but Kevin Leahy believes it is more likely to be an earlier Anglo-Saxon brooch, perhaps fifth or sixth century (pers comm.) |
