Title
Early medieval coin brooch of Edward the Confessor
Description
English: A brooch or badge made from a gilded silver Early Medieval penny of Edward the Confessor (1042-66). The brooch is missing its pin, but other attachments of the mechanism remain in the form of two rivets holding in place two strips of metal used to secure the pin. All attachments were made to the obverse of the coin, and the reverse is gilded for show, forming the front of the brooch. The two rivets can be seen on the reverse, the gilding apparently undertaken after these were in place. Below the right-hand attachment plate two other small perforations can be seen but it is difficult to ascertain whether these were deliberate piercings or are the result of wear, but appears to be more likely the latter.

Description of coin:

An early medieval silver penny of Edward the Confessor (1042-66), Expanding Cross type (North 832/1; BMC Vb), moneyer: Godesbrand, mint: Shrewsbury, date: 1050-3.

Obverse: Helmeted bust facing left, sceptre in front; inscription: EDPERD [REX]

Reverse: Short cross, voided, with expanding arms. In the centre two circles, one under the cross. There is a small cross pattée in each angle; inscription: GODESBRAND ON SCRE

The brooch is also recorded on EMC as 2014.0001. This coin appears to be only the third of its type recorded, and the second by this moneyer. It is possible this coin is a die duplicate of EMC 2000.0070 although this is not entirely certain given the condition of the other coin, and the modifications to this one. See also EMC 1042.1228.
