Title
Early medieval coin: Sceat, Porcupine type (obverse, reverse)
Description
English: Silver sceat. Porcupine type, N*45 (BMC 4, Series E) Mass: 0.85g. Diameter: 12.0mm. There is a small nick on the edge of the flan. The sceat recorded here is similar to number 247 in "Thrymsas and Sceattas in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford", volume 2, Metcalfe, 1993. Coin 247 is a Kloster Barthe variety (c710-15 to c.735). The weights of over 700 porcupines in the Kloster Barthe hoard vary widely between 0.82g and 1.58g, with the modal value c.1.25g. The coin recorded here, whilst very slightly incomplete is at the lower end of this range.
