Title |
Early medieval coin: Coin brooch of Eadgar |
||
Description |
English: A penny of Eadgar, AD959-975 (EMC 2014.0296); parts of the circumference are missing in two areas. The obverse has been gilded. The edge of a small circular hole survives in the edges of one of the breaks which, together with the gilding, suggests that the coin was converted into a brooch, the hole being one of two used to attach a pin.
The coin is of a previously unrecorded type. In view of the missing portions the best guess is that the obverse would originally have read EA / DG / AR / REX (in a design reminiscent of the Luda penny of Alfred); it would fit in with other revivals of earlier coin-types in the pre-Reform coinage of Eadgar (e.g. London monogram of Alfred on London halfpennies). The Alpha/Omega on the reverse is comparable to types which place odd letters in the field (but not Alpha and Omega). The reverse inscription is fragmentary, but the second visible part appears to be ... O[with macron] SCEF..., so this is a coin of Shaftesbury. However, the segment of moneyer's name visible earlier (...ÐELM...) does not match the one moneyer's name known for Edgar's pre-reform coinage at Shaftesbury (Leofstan). It is most likely that the moneyer is Æthelmaer, as there was a moneyer of that name at Shaftesbury in Æthelred II's First Hand type. |
