Title
Early medieval buckle
Description
English: A fragment of an Early Medieval period buckle, dating to c. AD 700-900.

The fragment consists of the upper part of the buckle plate. It would originally have been tongue shaped but is now badly broken and truncated. There are a pair of circular apertures close to the folded area where it would have attached the buckle frame. One of these apertures is broken. The beginnings of more openings are just visible, and these appear larger than the first pair of relatively neat circles. On the upper surface there appears to be a form of zoomorphic design along the central spine, which terminates in the head of a beast pointing towards the buckle frame. The muzzle is clearly demarcated, so it appears it may have been a bovine of some form. The eyes are composed of ring and dot designs, and appear bulbous.

It is relatively similar to OXON-F90EFD and potentially would have been similar to BERK-B5C106 if complete. The regularly spaced design of the openwork is akin to KENT-44A380. It was found near to DEV-FB8E3F and is very similar in styling and broader design.
