Title |
Early medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy buckle dating from the Early Medieval period. The buckle is 36mm long, 38.2mm wide and 11mm thick. It has an oval sectioned bar which is worn at the ends and which is gripped by two animal heads. These extend into the extremely extended outer edge which is convex and rounded. It is decorated in Borre style with further designs which are probably the bodies of the two animals entwined, but the design is too worn to be certain. The reverse is hollow. The pin and plate are missing. The metal is dark grey green. Similar examples can be seen in figure 68.6 in Leahy (2007) and on page 21 of Saxon and Viking Artefacts by Mills. A tenth or eleventh century date is most likely. |
