Title |
Early medieval buckle |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy Early Medieval incomplete buckle with an integral plate. Almost all of the frame and the pin are missing. The buckle is 36.4mm long, 12.6mm wide and 3.6mm thick. The integral plate is sub-triangular in plan and section. It is decorated with ring and dot decoration and incised chevrons in three groups of three. Together, these could be interpreted as three animal masks. There is a circular hole in the frame end of the plate through which the pin would have attached. The reverse is not decorated. A similar example can be seen in West's (1998) Corpus of Anglo Saxon Material from Suffolk on page 120. The buckle probably dates from the mid to late Saxon period, perhaps the 6th to the 9th century. |
