Title
Early medieval buckle
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy zoomorphic D-shaped buckle dating to the Early Medieval period, c. AD 1000-1100.

The frame is complete but the pin is missing. The object has a single loop D-shaped frame which is pointed oval in cross-section. The buckle loop is enlarged and tapers towards the strap bar which is off-set and narrowed, and cylindrical in shape. At each of the loop terminals which adjoin the strap bar is a stylised beast's head, possibly that of a canine. The beast has an elongated muzzle with clearly demarcated jowls, and a central spine to the nose. It has large eyes which are pointed oval in shape, and placed on each side of the buckle frame. The eyes themselves lie within sockets of the same shape which are incised around the raised eye area. Long ears extend backwards from above the eye, and these are akin to the long floppy ears of a hunting hound. Behind the head is a raised transverse ridge which may represent a collar. Although the majority of the frame between the two beast heads is undecorated, there is nonetheless a clearly visible spine.

Several similar buckles have been recorded on the PAS database including: LVPL-3B6EFF, LVPL-3D4846, HESH-913D85, LVPL-AAE215, YORYM-023A40, and KENT-A88102. They have all been dated to c. AD 1000-1100.

Measurements: 27.2mm length, 24.3mm width, 7.4mm thickness, weight 14.95g.
