Title
Early medieval brooch
Description
English: An almost complete copper alloy early medieval equal arm brooch, dating to AD 450 - 570. The two arms of the brooch are identical, and triangular in shape. At both terminal ends are two rounded bifoliate projections, there is a circular indentation in each. At the wider ends of the arms in each corner there is a circular projection, in the centre is a circular indentation. Running along the edges of each arm is a repeated circular incised border. This border also projects out from the bow slightly. The bow sits between the two arms, and is triangular shaped in cross section. The centre of the bow is raised in a sharp ridge. On the reverse is the pin hinge and the catch plate, they sit underneath the wider part of the arms. The hinge is rounded, and is covered in a red brown iron staining suggesting that the missing pin was made of iron. The catch plate is rectangular in shape, and is missing the curved edge to hold the pin. The brooch has a mid green patina, and measures 46.6mm in length, 11.5mm in width, 12.7mm in maximum thickness and weighs 7.57g.
