Title
Early medieval brooch
Description
English: Copper-alloy ansate brooch, made up of two parallel-sided arms of equal size joined by an arched bow. There are five raised decorative bands along the bow; at the ends of the arms, where the arms meet the central arch, and in the very middle of the bow. The hinge is intact but the pin and catch plate are missing. File marks are visible on the rear of the object. The brooch has a dark brown patina and is in good condition.

This type of brooch appears to have been worn in England during the middle Anglo-Saxon period, the 8th to 10th century; it is derived from Merovingian prototypes. Compare similar brooches on the PAS database, e.g. LEIC-84CA42.
