Title |
Early medieval brooch; fragment of square-headed small long brooch |
||
Description |
English: Early medieval brooch; cast copper alloy fragment of small long brooch of 5th or 6th century date. The fragment is the head of the brooch with the curved bow. It is broken off at the base of the bow. The head is roughly square but has sections missing from all sides. The bow is narrow and humped. The fixing for the pin is present on the back of the head, in the form of a curved lug with a hole pierced through it. There is an accretion of rust-coloured corrosion around the lug, suggesting that the pin was made of an iron-rich metal and has now corroded away. There is no extant decoration on the brooch fragment.
Length 30.5mm, width 23.3mm, thickness 13.7mm, weight 8.29g Ref: MacGregor and Bolick “Ashmolean Museum; A Summary Catalogue of the Anglo-Saxon Collections (Non-ferrous Metals)” (pp. 125-134, especially nos. 15.25 & 15.36) |
