Title
Early medieval brooch: Weetch (2013) Type II.Aii
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy ansate brooch with circular terminals, dating to the early medieval period (c. AD 750-900). Weetch Type II.Aii.

The brooch has two flat, rounded terminals joined by an arched bow which is D-shaped in section and appears undecorated. The terminals are decorated with an incised with a punched ring-and-dot motif in each quadrant. The terminals have a decorative edge of small punched dots. One terminal is only partially complete.

The reverse of the brooch is undecorated. The broken terminal presents iron staining on the surviving part of the pin perforation and on the surface of the terminal. The complete terminal presents no surviving remains of the pin lug.

The brooch is in a rough condition with pitting present on the surface. This is the first ansate brooch to be reported from Cheshire and the third to be recorded from the North West of England with the other two examples recorded under LANCUM-9F2F07 (without image) and LANCUM-763051. The brooch is in a similar style to NMS-4E7124 as well as OXON-6B8D7D, which is without the dividing cross on the terminals.

Early medieval finds from Cheshire are uncommon. Another early medieval from this parish is a silver hooked tag: LVPL-3E48B7
