Title
Early medieval : Brooch
Description
English: A cast copper-alloy ansate brooch of early-medieval date. The body of the brooch is a bevelled arch which tapers to a point at either end. The bend between the body and the ends of the brooch have a transverse bar of decoration, otherwise the brooch is undecorated. A double pin lug is present on the reverse of one terminal and the catch plate on the opposite terminal is turned over. The pin is missing. The metal has a mid blackish-brown glossy patina. The brooch is 38.75mm long, 6.48mm wide, 8.59mm thick and weighs 4.60g. Brooches of this type date to the 8th or 9th centuries, and this brooch most probably represents an English copy of a Frankish style. Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt, p.380.
