Title |
Early medieval (possibly) spindle whorl |
||
Description |
English: Spindle whorl; cast lead spindle whorl of possible late Early Medieval or early Medieval date. The whorl is a flat disc with moulded linear decoration on one face. The decoration is in the form of two interlaced triangles which give an irregular six-pointed star design overall. The other face also has some indication of moulded decoration, although this is far more tentative and may just be worn or miscast.
Spindle whorls are notoriously difficult date as they remained in use, in a very similar design, for many centuries, from the Roman period to early Post Medieval times. However, the style of this spindle whorl with the cast linear decoration and flat, rectangular cross section has similarities to known examples, including some excavated from anglo-scandinavian contexts in York. This is the basis for the tentative suggestion of dating for this example. Diameter 29.86mm, thickness 8.10mm, internal diameter of perforation (non-tapering) c.10.3mm, weight 39.56g. |
