Title
Early medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) strap end
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy zoomorphic strap end dating to the early medieval (late Anglo-Saxon) period. The object is tongue-shaped in plan and rectangular and slightly convex in section. At the upper end the plate bifurcates. Each plate possesses two circular perforations. The lower end of the object tapers to form a rounded terminal in the form of a moulded animal head. The upper surface of the object is decorated with an incised sub-rectangular field enclosing a hatched design of lozenges. Beneath this is a zone consisting of three rows of ribbing, followed by the terminal. The underside of the strap end is plain. The strap end measures 41mm in length, is a maximum of 9.5mm wide and has a maximum thickness of 2.5mm. The two circular perforations each measure 2mm in diameter. The strap end weighs 2.75 grams.
