Title
Early medieval: Tweezers (detail)
Description
English: A complete and very well preserved pair of tweezers of Middle Saxon date.

The tweezers have wide flaring blades which are characteristically mid-Saxon, and a circular spring where the two blades meet. Along each of the sides is a bordering groove. On both blades there is decoration comprising punched pits and these coincide with lengths of the bordering grooves.

Both sides also have additional decoration in the form of thin incised lines. On one side this appears as a diagonal cross and a series of five transverse lines. Between one pair of lines is a pair of similar crosses, between the next pair is a single cross and between the final pair is a pair of diagonal lines (placed as if the crosses have not been finished). On the other side is a group of six transverse lines which are overlaid by a long arrow-like shape which points away from the blades. The punched decoration is placed adjacent to the blades and the incised decoration is placed adjacent to the punched decoration but closer to the spring.
