Title
Early medieval: Square-headed brooch
Description
English: A fragment of an Early Medieval copper-alloy Kentish square-headed brooch dating to c.500-575. What survives is part of the lower half of the brooch below the arched bow, the lower part of the central ridge of which survives. On the back is the stub of a hinge. The fragment bears part of a central cross, perhaps with expanding arms, with a central circle. The angles are likely to have contained stylised animal motifs in a Salin Style I motif but this is too worn and fragmentary to see with clarity.

Jo Ahmet comments:

Macgregor and Bolick (1993, 123, fig 14.8-14.9) illustrate a pair of similar Small/Kentish square-headed brooches from Brighthampton, Oxfordshire, Chatham Lane, Kent and a single stray find from Harwell, Oxfordshire.(124, fig 14.10).

There are also a number from Bifrons ('Chadwick-Hawkes, S. 2000. The Anglo-Saxon cemetery of Bifrons, in the parish of Patrixbourne, East Kent. Anglo-Saxon. in: Anglo-Saxon Studies in Archaeology and History 11). One pair comes form Grave 51 (Chadwick-Hawkes 2000, 44) and there are two stray finds no. 78+79 (Chadwick-Hawkes 2000, 72).
