16-year-old Naomi goes to an urban safe space run by AGEP. The programme has also opened a savings account for her. Naomi isn’t married. “When I see a cute boy out there I think ‘ooh, cute lips, he’s got a nice walk’. I feel I might need him, want him. But that’s just infatuation! “I’ve learnt a lot about early marriage. It prevents us from fulfilling our dreams. I want to grow up and complete my education and getting married would mean I’d have to look after a baby and a husband. “I used to spend my money if I had it. But nowadays I save it - I can use it for my school fees and education. The safe space has really helped me.” AGEP is an empowerment programme that involves weekly girls group meetings with training on health, life skills and financial education, a voucher for health services, and a girl-friendly savings account. Girls and women everywhere have the right to live free from violence and discrimination. Help end child, early and forced marriage in a generation.
