Title
Early early-medieval small square-headed brooch
Description
English: An incomplete Early Early-Medieval (450-600 Anglo-Saxon) small-long brooch, missing the lower bow and catchplate, and the spring mechanism and pin. All breaks are old and worn.

The head-plate is rectangular in shape (20.1x15.8x2.1mm) with a border of pairs of punched triangles flanking the edges between a pair of grooved lines, along three edges. The bow extends from the bottom edge of the fourth edge with a single linear groove above it. To the reverse is an incomplete D-shaped lug, broken across its central piercing (2.6mm internal diameter).
The bow is 8.8mm wide and 3.1mm thick below the head-plate. At this point it is rectangular in cross-section, but after c.5mm two transverse grooves flank a section triangular in cross-section as the bow curves outwards and inwards again. At the other end, and shortly before the break, are another two transverse grooves followed by a square-shaped area D-shaped in cross-section. The apex of the bow is slightly flattened. At the break the bow measures 6.2x3.2mm.

The metal is dark green in colour with a smooth patina. It measures 35.4mm in incomplete length, (max)20.1mm in width, (max)10.9mm in depth and weighs 7.86 grams.
