Title
Early Saxon lead model for wrist clasp
Description
English: Early Saxon Fragment possibly of a lead model for a wrist clasp: three conjoined circular mouldings with central dots are integral with a flanking rib decorated with transverse grooves. On reverse a squashed transverse projection or unpierced lug. 21mm x 9.5mm, but both ends broken. If this a wrist clasp model then the product would have been of Hines’ form B18c. Might the function of the lug have been as a handle used in pushing the model into the clay mould. There is no evidence of the attachment spigots that are essential parts of such wrist clasps, nor signs of the hook or eye. Probably 6th century.
