Description
English: Incomplete Early Saxon gilded square-headed brooch, in three joining pieces, all breaks neither ancient nor very recent, with fractures that are granular but with patches of corrosion. The head-plate has two rectangular garnets set within Style I ornament filling the inner panel, punched conjoined dots (figure-of-eights) and annulets around this, and double triangular stamps, annulets and conjoined dots around frame. Reserved upper corners of the head-plate where applied silver sheets missing. Stumps of double lug for pin-bar on reverse. Break at springing of bow. Perforated hollow-backed bow with fragment of missing separate stud burred-over on reverse. Foot-plate with addorsed openwork animal heads springing from either side of junction with bow. Heads with dots for eyes, stamped annulets and conjoined dots. Footplate bar with lines of stamped conjoined dots, flanked by two triangular garnets set within Style I ornament, most of foot-plate side lobes and their applied silver sheets missing, lower foot-plate broken above joining terminal lobe, applied silver sheet missing. Short catch-plate on reverse of foot-plate. 64 x 152mm. Leeds type B1, Hines Group XVI.
