Title |
Early Saxon hair pin |
||
Description |
English: Early Saxon incomplete hair pin. Damaged domed head with an arc of two engraved lines across the side, perhaps once echoed by a similar pair on the opposite part of the head, now missing. Circular-sectioned shank with two broad transverse ribs between six narrow ones above an enlarged polyhedral boss, below which are the remains of two narrow ribs and part of either a third narrow or a broad rib above an ancient break. The general feel of this large and elaborate pin is broadly similar to examples in Böhme (1974), Tafel 83, nos.6 and 7, belonging to the late 4th-mid.5th century. But closer (unprovenanced, probably Frankish) parallels with polyhedral bosses can be found in MacGregor (1997) 256, nos.140.2-140.3. Late 6th-7th century. |
