Title
Early Saxon great square-headed brooch fragment
Description
English: Small fragment of the headplate of an Early Saxon great square-headed brooch of Hines' (1997) Group XVI. It consists of approximately one half of the inner panel, one half of the second panel and a small remnant of the headplate frame. The breaks all the way around the edge are not recent. The inner and second panels are decorated with geometric patterns in relief: the inner panel contains a hollow square within a rectilinear frame and the second panel has s-shaped scrolls along the bottom, side and top and a square pellet in the top right-hand corner. It's divided from the headplate frame by a raised border which is itself decorated by closely spaced short transverse punches. The remnant of the headplate frame is decorated with fine dot punches and a very fine border of joined lozenge shapes, creating a chequer effect within a narrow strip.

On the reverse of the piece there is the base of a single pin lug, which stands just about two millimetres high, and is broken and worn. No trace of the perforation or the pin survives.

Length 28.0mm, width 28.0mm, thickness 5.0mm. Weight 9g. c. 525 - 570AD

This fragment corresponds very closely to an almost complete piece illustrated in Hines (1997) plate 58 (b).
