Description |
English: Fragment of Early Saxon Great square-headed brooch, broken, burnt and slightly distorted. Small part of footplate, decorated with grooved central bar between four narrow transversely notched ribs and outer ribs ending in perforated lobes at junction with terminal lobe. In the centre of the lobe, which is edged at the top by oblique beaded ribs, a mask in high relief with pointed chin, tiny eyes and nose faces upwards. The lower edge of the lobe is missing, the granular break a result of fire. >26 x >29mm. 5th-6th century AD. |
