Title |
Early Saxon cruciform brooch (drawn by J. Gibbons) |
||
Description |
English: Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch of Leeds and Pocock's Group V Florid Cruciform type, upper part of footplate and stub of lower end of bow, almost all edges broken, all breaks ancient but with some recent minor damage. A rectangular panel of “chip carved” Style I ornament within a double frame is set between a pair of lappets, of which only small parts survive, and above a mask with large eyes and triangular nose. Decoration on the lappets is also in Style I, with two feet in each lappet resting against the rectangular frame. The sides of the uppermost part of the mask are unbroken. Stub of catchplate on reverse. Length >48mm. Width >31mm.
The form is closest to Group V sub-group (j), but the nature of the lappet decoration is different, sub-group (j) bearing eye and nose motifs. It is just possible that the fragment is part of a much less common Great Square-headed / Group V hybrid brooch of Hines (1997) Group XXI. mid/late 6th century. |
