Title
Early Saxon cosmetic implement
Description
English: Early Saxon Upper part of probable cosmetic implement of rectangular section (5mm x 2.5mm) with round suspension hole through the broad face near the rounded top. Rather worn. Both broad faces are decorated with four pairs of transverse grooves, between which are edge nicks, two large and V-shaped, one smaller and rounded. At 30mm below the top the decoration ceases and the section abruptly turns square (slightly <3mm). At 41mm below the top there is a non-recent break. The square section is unlike that of most toilet implements (MacGregor and Bolick 1993, 216), and the object seems a little heavy. However the similarity with pieces such as the ear-scoop from Minster Lovell Grave 3 (ibid. 218, 37.6) is great. Mid to late 5th century.
