Title
Early Roman: Incomplete dragonesque brooch
Description
English: An incomplete dragonesque plate brooch of Roman dating (AD 75 to AD 175).

Around 75% of the brooch survives, with only the head, body and part of the pin present. The tail and rest of the pin are missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The brooch has a backwards S-shaped body, with originally two terminals which take the form of a head with a snout and curved protrusions and rounded terminals with small circular depressions, which may represent ears or eyes. Around the neck of the upper terminal is a wound copper alloy ring, with an incomplete projection. This is the pin, used to secure the brooch to a garment. The reverse is concave. The front has been decorated with punched ring and dots. The lower terminal is missing.

It measures 40.8 mm in length, 19.6 mm wide and 2.1 mm thick.

The brooch is a dark brown colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.
