Title
Early Post Medieval: Trapezoidal moulded buckle
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy double looped sub trapezoidal buckle of Post Medieval dating (c. AD 1600 - AD 1700).

The buckle frame is sub rectangular / trapezoidal in plan, with concave sides. The front of the buckle exhibits moulded floral decoration, with lozenges at the corners and rouletted ridges between the flowers at the centre of each side. A large area of iron staining is present around the central bar. This large area probably contains the remains of a sub triangular pin, wrapped around the central bar. The reverse of the buckle is concave, with ridges around the outside and central edges.

The buckle plate is missing, the pin is probably incomplete and hidden in the area of iron staining.

The buckle measures 36.15 mm long, 28.94 mm wide and 3.87 mm thick. It weighs 9.9 g.

The buckle is a mid to dark green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

No direct parallel to this buckle has been found at the time of recording. The moulded decoration is suggestive of Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1600s to AD 1700s).
