Title
Early Post Medieval: Square headed button
Description
English: A complete cast copper alloy button, with attached shank, of Early Post Medieval dating (16th to 17th Centuries AD).

The button can be described in two parts: the head and the shank.

The head is pyramidal in shape, with a square flat base. The base (underside / back) of the head is plain and undecorated. The front of the head consists of four triangular faces, joined at the apex (tip) of the pyramid. Each of the triangular faces has a plain border, with what appears to be foliate decoration on the interior. These borders form a cross on the surface. However the surface of the button has suffered from a degree of abrasion so it is hard to see the original style of decoration.

The shank has been cast separately and fixed / soldered with a rectangular plate onto the back of the head, from corner to corner. This means that the cross on the front of the brooch is vertical in alignment as opposed to being a saltire cross. The shank is sub-oval in plan, and rectangular in cross section. A large circular hole is present at the end of the shank, with an internal diameter of 4.17mm. The end of the shank has suffered from a degree of abrasion, which has had the result that the edge of the hole is not an uniform thickness all the way round. It is possible that this change in thickness is a casting defect.

The button is a mid to dark green colour, with an uneven surface patination. The edges of the button exhibit a minor degree of abrasion, with darker metal showing through the lighter green surface patination. The abrasion has meant that the decorative details are not clearly defined.

The button measures 14.62mm in length, 10.98mm wide and 10.95mm thick. It weighs 1.6 grams.

Similar style buttons are illustrated on p.25 of Bailey (2004), dated to the Tudor period (Late 15th to 16th Centuries). Pyramid headed square buttons do not appear to be a common button type, with only four others having been recorded on the PAS database (SUR-A91464,WMID-FF8AD3, CORN-1A2EC0 and SWYOR-7BF764).
