Title
Early Post Medieval: Purse bar, Williams Class H
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper alloy purse bar, of Early Post Medieval dating (Late 16th to Early 17th Centuries AD).

Approximately 75% of the purse bar is present, with the central part of the bar and two incomplete downward pointing arms. Cast vertical ridges separate the central part of the bar, with the suspension hole for the loop, from the arms. Both arms are flat with cast foliate decoration. An incomplete circular hole is present on the lower edges of both arms.

The purse bar measures 57.84 mm in length, 16.66 mm wide and 10.43 mm thick. It weighs 19.1 g.

It is a mid green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface and decoration.

The flat angled arms with cast foliate decoration is charateristic of a Williams Class H(Williams, forthcoming) purse bar, consistent with Late 16th to Early 17th Century dating. This purse bar variant is one of several previously unrecognised by those originally classified by Ward-Perkins in his Medieval catalogue of the Museum of London, published in 1940.

Several other examples have been recorded on the PAS database including: SUR-4E8851, LANCUM-9D6657; SUR-9D48F7; SUR-AC4468; SUR-2D4C27; NARC-B914D8; NMS-D34BB6, DENO-B28F08, BERK-F29113 and SUSS-AABBC7.
