Title
Early Post Medieval: Incomplete toggle clasp
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy toggle clasp, probably from a sword belt, of Early Post medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1700).

The toggle clasp is irregular in plan and section. The object has a central, circular hole (internal diameter 3.68 mm). On two sides of the circular perforation are rectangular projects which have two notches each. Between the two projections on both sides, the object tapers into a 'waist' which has a much smaller circular perforation (internal diameter 2.09 mm) itself. The 'waist' then widens out to form a horizontal bar with a single notch at either end. There is a clear break at the other end of the object and this would have gone on to form either a hook or eye fastening.

The toggle clasp measures 23.98 mm in length, 13.62 mm wide and 2.31 mm thick. It weighs 1.6 g.

The toggle clasp is a mid green colour, with an even surface patina.

Similar fittings are illustrated in Read (2008) p. 208-9, nos. 753-5 and classified as an Early Post Medieval toggle clasp, type 1. Toggle clasps are closely associated with sword belts and scabbard fittings. Similar toggle clasps have been recorded on the PAS database, including HAMP-58B2E4 and DUR-FCC507.
