Title |
Early Post Medieval: Incomplete double looped buckle frame |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy double-looped spectacle buckle dating to the early Post Medieval period, circa AD1550-1650. The pin and the pin bar are missing, but the buckle frame is complete and in fair condition. The buckle is sub-oval in plan. Owing to the missing pin bar, the buckle now has 1, oval loop but originally would have had 2 equally sized D-shaped loops. The longest sides of the frame have moulded decoration comprising of a groove or recess which would have aligned with the pin bar. Three slightly angled ridges are present to either side of the groove. The rest of the buckle frame is plain and undecorated with a sub-oval section. The surfaces of the brooch are worn due to movement in the plough soil, with an uneven mid-brown / green patina.
Length: 17.53mm. Width: 23.29mm. Thickness: 3.03mm. Weight: 2.5g Comparable buckles are recorded in Margeson: 1993, p30, figs 168-171 and Whiehead: 2003, p61, no 361. |
