Title
Early Post Medieval: Incomplete decorated button
Description
English: An incomplete lead or lead alloy button, of Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1650).

About 90% of the button is present, consisting of the front head. The loop is missing, presumed lost in antiquity.

The button consists of a slightly domed discoidal head, with moulded decoration. The decoration consists of a central raised pellet, with four smaller pellets in a square shape around it. A raised ship is at the top of the button, with two crowns beneath it to either side of the central pellet. A possible thistle is at the base of the design. The reverse of the button is flat with a central ridge, and the base of the integral attachment loop.

It has a diameter of 27.1 mm and is 9.1 mm thick. It weighs 16.8 g.

The button is a dark grey colour, with an even surface patina.

Similar style buttons, although none with a similar style of design have been recorded on the PAS database. This style of button is typically considered to be Early Post Medieval in dating (Ad 1500 to AD 1650).
