Title
Early Post Medieval: Incomplete Read Class A Type 2 dress hook / hooked clasp
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy dress hook (blunt hooked hook), of Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1600 - AD 1700).

The hooked tag is ovoid (oval) in plan, with originally three debased trefoil attachment knops (or loops), of which one is complete, the other two are incomplete. An incomplete blunt hook is present. The centre of the tag is decorated with an oval panel bearing a a spray of three flowers, bordered by ring and dot motifs. A projecting angular collar is present at the juncture between the plate and hook. The back is plain and undecorated.

The hooked clasp measures 34.5 mm in length, 24.3 mm wide and 1.8 mm thick. It weighs 3.7 grams.

The hooked clasp is a mid green to brown colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the ploughsoil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface and decorational detail.

A comparative example has been published as #640 in Read, 2008 (p171) and he has classified them as Early Post Medieval Class A single blunt hooked and eye clasps, Type 2 which have three attachment knops. These are considered to be 17th Century in dating. Several similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database, including: SWYOR-E47D07; SOM-66AE51; SOM-E0FF65 and SWYOR-6B0EA2.
