Title
Early Post Medieval: Incomplete Class J3 purse bar
Description
English: An incomplete copper alloy attachment bar from an purse, of Early Post Medieval dating (15th to 16th Centuries AD).

The attachment bar is T shaped, with a central trapezoidal block, located on one side. The arms are circular in cross section and have an overall length, including the terminal, of 23.3 mm. The shaped of the terminals is that of a dome or a mushroom. At the base of the central block, on this upper arm, there is an integral shank (now incomplete), circular in cross-section, which penetrates the lower central block.

The attachment bar measures 59.3 mm in length, 17.6 mm wide and 8.8 mm thick. It weighs 13.3 g.

The attachment bar is a mid to dark green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

This attachment bar is considered to be consistent with a Williams Class J3 purse bar. These are two piece purse bars, with a T shaped attachment bar (like this example) which attaches into a simple bar with integral terminals. Several complete examples have been recorded on the PAS database including: LEIC-EE4066, DUR-A81FF1 and IOW-06E7B5.
