Title
Early Post Medieval: Hawking bell
Description
English: A complete cast silver spherical 'hawking' bell, of Early Post Medieval dating (15th to 16th Centuries AD).

The bell is formed of upper and lower hemispheres soldered or brazed together, in a raised join around the centre and decorated with a cable ornament. The upper hemisphere is plain with a silver loop soldered to the centre. The loop is formed of a D-shaped loop of silver attached to the bell. The lower hemisphere has a thin sound slot ending in small circular holes, running right across it. A pea (of uncertain material) is still present inside the bell. There is no evidence of a maker's mark.

The bell measures 16.60 mm tall and has a diameter of 13.26 mm. It weighs 1.8 g.

The bell is a light to mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Pressure, whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in the bell being slightly misshapen.

In the Early Post Medieval Period (15th to 16th Centuries AD), small bells, such as this example, were used for jesses on hawks and falconsl collars for dogs and cats; as well as being an element in horse furniture. Similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database as KEN-CA83D8 & DENO-127662.
