Title
Early Post Medieval: Complete rotary casket key (locking)
Description
English: A complete copper alloy rotary key, of Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1600 to AD 1700).

The handle /bow is a 'D' shape in plan with two spurs on the internal vertical edge. The stem protrudes from the mid point of the vertical edge of the bow. The stem has a moulded collar which is decorated with transverse grooves. The stem, after the collar, is narrowed and solid. The bit is an off-set vertical rectangle in plan. No clefts have been cut into the bit.

The key measures 31.83 mm in length, 15.16 mm wide and 4.03 mm thick. It weighs 2.8 g.

The key is a mid brown colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

A similar key has been published as No 1288 in Margeson (1993) and has been dated to the 17th Century. Several similar casket keys have been recorded on the PAS database including: WAW-71E777, LON-32BDE3, BH-B60766, SUSS-11EAF4, SUSS-015D74, SOM-1DBB01 and NMS-517722.
