Title
Early Palaeolithic Handaxe
Description
English: Very slim handaxe with an impressive white porous patination with some small areas of spotty iron staining. It is largely complete apart from a few recent chips revealing that it is made from pale grey flint. The tool is also slightly rolled. The profile towards the butt is plano-convex, which suggests that it is made from a large flake or a naturally fractured portion of a larger nodule. The convex face of the butt has a large hollow with thin weathered cortex inside, a renmant of the flake's irregular dorsal surface.

Handaxes are the type tool of the Lower Palaeolithic period (c.600,000 - c.100,000 years before present, when Britain, as part of Europe, was inhabited sporadically when climatic conditions were suitable. It is generally considered that handaxes were primarily butchery tools.

145 x 60 x 25.5mm.
