Title
Early Medieval to Medieval stirrup-strap mount
Description
English: A copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of probable 11th century date.

The mount is sub-pentagonal in plan, the base being horizontal, the lower third of the long sides vertical, the upper two thirds converging towards a rounded apex. A zoomorphic head, moulded in high relief, is located at the centre, its lower jaw following the bottom edge of the mount. The head is of bat-like appearance, a pair of large, rounded ears with deeply recessed centres projecting from the top of the head. The highest point is the nose ridge, which is flanked by the two large, sub-oval grooved eyes. At the base of the eyes is a horizontal groove, which may represent the mouth of the animal. A pair of circular perforations flank the face, with a second pair above the ears. A slightly smaller aperture is located below the apex. The surface of the mount is decorated with a roughly symmetrical pattern of shallow grooves; these combine with nine peripheral lobes, to create what is probably a simplified, highly stylised zoomorphic design. The flange, located at the bottom, is slightly angled, steps inwards at one end and has a central, iron-filled rivet hole. The mount measures 53.7mm high, 36.9mm wide and 13.7mm deep. The weight is 36.84g.

This stirrup mount is classified as a Williams Class B, Type 3, Group 1 (see Williams 1997: fig. 56/p. 91). It forms part of an interesting group of related 11th century metalwork - see also BH-9BF588, BH-9B4B78, BH-9BC397 and BH-9C3582.
