Title |
Early Medieval strap end |
||
Description |
English: A complete copper alloy late Early Medieval strap end with split attachment end, possibly dating to c.10th to the 11th century. The strap end is rectangular in shape and flares out to two circular shapes with moulded decoration at the termimal end, creating aV shaped collar above. There are also two half circles on the terminal edge, these could either be spirals, or zoomorphic eyes. Between the two circular shapes on the outside edge the strap end is worn, it is possible that this is a worn break. The attachment end is squared off, and has a central circular rivet hole with a copper alloy rivet still in situ. Part of the terminal edge of the rivet hole is worn and broken. The attachment split measures 19.2mm in length. The reverse is undecorated. The strap end is a dark brown colour, with patches of bright green patina. It measures 33.8mm in length, 13.6mm in maximum width, and 5.9mm in maximum thichness. It weighs 6.85g. |
