Title |
Early Medieval strap end |
||
Description |
English: A complete cast lead alloy Early Medieval strap end dating to circa AD875 - 1100. The strap end is heavily abraded and a rivet hole is damaged. The strap end has a square split end with a tapering plate which is broadly triangular in plan. Both sides of the split end have a rivet hole in each corner (4 rivet holes altogether). There is a large perforation in the centre of the plate with an internal diameter of 3.92mm and another perforation, with an internal diameter of 2.05mm at the tip of the plate. The central perforation suggests that this may be a book strap end. The reverse of the strap end is flat. The face of the strap end has a small step defining the split end from the plate and some very abraded moulded decoration at the tip. The strap end has an uneven green / brown patina.
Length: 47.10mm. Width: 12.01mm. Thickness at split terminal: 6.04mm. Weight: 11.7g. The strap end has been identified by Kevin Leahy as comparable to Thomas' Class F, which have the same shape and terminals with animal heads often with holes. 'Class F originated in Ireland and it is interesting to see one in lead: lead strap ends being an Anglo-Scandinavian/ late Saxon type. They were a long-lasting being in use from the later ninth to the eleventh century. These lead strap ends were not moulds, or models for making moulds, but finished objects in their own right. Many of their cousins, the lead brooches, still retain traces of their iron pins showing that they were used as dress fittings.' Leahy pers comm 5/2/2014. Recorded as a find of note. |
