Title
Early Medieval strap-end (incomplete)
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy strap-end of Early Medieval date.

The strap-end is of thin section, has slightly convex long sides and is broken at both ends. The attachment is entirely missing. The upper surface bears an incised design, the main surviving element of which is a pair of circles (one incomplete), within each of which there is a double-stranded cross with concave arms and a central lozenge. Adjacent to the complete circle, the design changes to a panel containing two triangles, which probably represent ears in a stylised zoomorphic head. At this broken edge there is what appears to be the remnant of a central rivet hole, suggesting possible later re-use as a mount. The strap-end has a dark green patina and is corroded in places. It measures 35mm in diameter, 14.6mm wide and 1.4mm thick. It weighs 3.78g.

Although incomplete, this is probably a Thomas Class A, Type 2 strap-end (Thomas 2003: 2), dating from the late 8th to late 10th/early 11th century. A strap-end bearing a similar geometric design is held in the British Museum's collection (see Wilson 1964: 135/pl. XIX, no. 21).
