Title
Early Medieval strap-end (incomplete)
Description
English: A damaged and corroded copper-alloy strap-end, dating from Early Medieval period.

At the top is a damaged attachment, into which the now-missing strap would have slotted. There are the remains of two rivet holes in what remains of the back plate; the upper plate is entirely missing. The long sides of the strap-end converge towards a rounded terminal, where there is a crudely executed zoomorphic head. A pair of moulded crescents, each with a central pellet, represents the ears; the area below is less clear due to corrosion, but the eyes appear to take the form of punched arcs. The central area of the strap-end contains a decorative panel of uncertain nature. Within the recessed areas of the design, both of the central panel and of the terminal, there is a corroded white substance, which may be niello. The strap-end measures 30.3mm long, 11.7mm wide and 1.4mm thick. The weight is 2.07g.

This is an example of a Thomas Class A strap-end (see Thomas 2003: 2). The current suggested dating for Class A strap-ends is late 8th to late 10th century.
