Title
Early Medieval stirrup mount
Description
English: An incomplete late early medieval to early medieval copper alloy stirrup strap mount, dating to c. 1070 - 1140. The mount is Williams Class A, Type 11A. The mount is a sub triangular shape, with the top of the mount broken and worn. On the front of the mount is moulded high relief decoration depicting a left facing lion standing on three legs with one foreleg raised, and the head raised up and back. The tail curls between the legs and up over the back, ending in a curled circle. The lion is enclosed by a raised border running along the edge of the mount. Underneath the design is two circular perforations, below this the edge of the mount is folded over at almost ninety degrees. The reverse is undecorated, but has a raised line running from the top down the centre of the mount, stopping half way. The mount has a light green patina. The mount measures 34.4mm in length, 28.4mm in width, and 14.66g in weight.
