Title |
Early Medieval square-headed brooch |
||
Description |
English: A cast, copper-alloy and gilded square-headed brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period.
The headplate consists of an inner panel made with a central quatrefoil set within five circumscribed squares (each missing the bottom fourth side between the quatrefoil and the bow). The second panel is C-shaped, again not enclosing the inner panel, and has scrolled T-shapes. There is no broad outer frame, though there is a double-line separating the second panel from the outside edges of the head. Gilding remains preserved in excellent condition in the incised decoration of the head.
The bow is curved in section and is decorated with three vertical ridges. The gilding is mostly worn away except in the lower section of the bow.
The footplate is made up of an extensive triple panelled footplate bar, two footplate upper borders and two footplate side lobes. The central footplate bar is plain and flanked on either side by a panel decorated with a simple interlace pattern. The upper borders are decorated with a zoomprphic face in profile and extend to the side lobes. The side lobes have a tear-shaped motif surrounded by an outer border. The foot terminal is missing.
There is a break between the headplate and the top of the bow.
The back is undecorated but retains the lugs for the hinged pin.
The brooch fits into Hines' Miscellaneous Group, from Hines (1997) A New Corpus of Anglo-Saxon Great Square Headed Brooches. |
